Coloured glass for pearls is traded in
transparent or opaque rods of about 1 m in length with a
diameter of 0.5 cms. These rods are heated in a gas flame at a
temperature of 900° to 1000° C and then wound around a steel
stick which has previously been prepared with a special bead
release. Thus beads of different size are created, each of them
is a unique piece. The still hot and soft glass can be
manipulated by rolling, pressing or adding other colours for
dots or lines. In a special granulate the glass beads are then
cooled down slowly, put into water and taken off the steel
sticks. Finally they are cleaned with a small brush or a pipe
cleaner. |
